Debut of The Impossible Polaroid Project

From their Impossible project space on Broadway co-founders Dr. Florian Kaps and André Bosman of the new Polaroid-style film have launched their product to the world with a video introducing the people involved and with a photo exhibit of "firsts" imagery collection.

Linked to that site is the project's new site, all about the factory, making of the film and dfferent sizes, press information, people involved, photographers chosen to participate in the first collection and an article about Edwin Land and the fascination of instant film.

This is especially exciting to me because I love analog work. I have an SX-70 camera that has laid dormant since Time-Zero film went out of production. I also have a DayLab slide copier with 2 different Analog instant film holders I used to reproduce my slides onto Polaroid film.

I can't wait to try this new film!

For much of my adolescent years I was a proud member of a small but very strong Jr. Drum and Bugle Corps out of New York called The Southern Tier Grenadiers. We were all was significantly impacted by being a part of this team of unique and dedicated peers and adult leaders. It also kept us out of trouble.

Many lifetime friends were made and we have stayed connected since the corps folded in 1978. We have a group on Facebook and last week I announced that I wanted to start a Wiki page for our corps group. I tried to start an article but it was rejected for not having enough supporting web reference for a full blown article and I was advised by Wiki to start a web page or create a stub.

Today an excited member from the FB group posted a comment that he entered a stub. His comment is "I would recommend that you all work on the Grenadiers' Drum Corps Wiki page" (http://drumcorpswiki.com/Southern_Tier_Grenadiers)

I've entered another bit of information there today and will continue to find more information.

I'm excited about this and hope this continues!!!

Important Pictures

When Mr. McMillan asked what pictures we remember as being important, a reel of images flashed through my mind. I could have responded with Diane Arbus' work, Dorathea Lange's Migrant Mother, Man Ray and Weegee, but what sticks most is amateur photographer Charles Porter IV's photograph of firefighter Chris Fields holding a dying infant, Baylee Almon. This image won the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography in 1996.

The reason it sticks is that it's an image signifying pre-911 death of innocence of the United States. The making and distribution of the photo (and of another similar pic by Lester LaRue) is of innocence all around. Neither men knew each other but were just a few feet apart. The photographers were amateurs and took their pictures not knowing the baby was dying.

The baby is a symbol of all innocent victims. My children were small then, so the significance remained strong as I thought of the families involved in the bombing.

You know, I didn't think a bookmarking site would be a big deal, but now that I've done it I enjoy having all the sites I usually go to right there. It's very convenient and I have it up all the time. Previously I pawed through my browser's bookmark menu or relied on the URL drop-down. Changing that has cut down "searching" time.

Marketing through use of multiple mass communication applications via video-casting (also blogging and social media).

Tony Sweet is a photographer I met 15 years ago at the Gaithersburg Camera Club. He was a guest speaker giving an old fashioned slide presentation of his work to the group. During these 15 years he has kept up with technology to market himself and his photography passion.

Being visual media, photography lends itself to many applications. Tony uses these tools to tie together his communication with his network. His goal is to get people to attend hands on location photography workshops, which is how he makes his living.

Picturing Polygamy in America

Over the course of 18 months, photojournalist Stephanie Sinclair gained access to women of polygamist societies, capturing an intimate view of these groups in concern for their place in society.

"The women are not what you would conceive them to be." - S. Sinclair

Her pictures are featured in February issue of National Geographic.

Routine Shake-Up

The flower shop lady is not there today. I'm glad about that because I'm hoping to stay parked and catch up on work since I was out playing in the snow all weekend.

Following the Saturday morning snow report, the DJ on 301.1 said, "Stay inside, keep warm, enjoy your family." I looked over at my family - two cats curled together on the couch - and went straight for my boots and camera.

I appreciate a little routine shake-up... keeps things human. I walked around a tree creaking with heavy snow and there was Tall Bill, with his yellow hair and snow-soaked eyeglasses. He stopped to ask if Beans was open for breakfast. Yes, I had gotten my coffee there. A path of footprints had already been tromped from the road to the smoke shop. Patient plows and leashed dogs shared the road. Sledders, skiers and snowshoers intersected at Market and Patrick and became acquainted. Later I was dodging real snowballs at Baker Park, rather than on Facebook. I even had a non-business encounter with my lawyer.. I think.

Back in the apartment my warm family still claimed custody of the couch. Cocoa and biscuits tasted better than usual but I confess, I was itching to settle in with my computer to edit and show-and-tell.

Playing with Food on Thursdays

I can't wait for Thursdays because that's when I work with a chef photographing food for a book. In 23 years I've done all kinds of photography and some food but this is the first ongoing food gig.

I'm trying to convincing the chef to share some of her ideas online but she wants to wait until the book is out before publishing actual recipes. I think a little hype on the web might give it a head start... maybe I can persuade a preface idea and some of her history, like how she won a national cooking award a while back.

I did get the go-ahead to show images. The image above is one of the first dishes I shot - mushrooms, cheese and spinach baked in a flaky dough. If you think it looks good, I did a good job. If you don't like spinach, that's way too bad, because this was delicious.

Food photography is an art all it's own. I think of it like photographing an artist's work, or even as a portrait; capturing the essence of the subject. After doing some research and shooting I've confirmed just how much work goes into photographing food. Check out this food photographer's take.

Get The Picture

Despite my current status one thing remains dominant in my life - photography and the arts.

Though I was an early reader I preferred picture books, and still do. I've danced and played piano since 7 and still do. I'd sneak out the family camera and make scrap books of my life. Gifts were my photographs and other creations. I was Topsy in "Uncle Tom's Cabin". Participation in Drum Corps dominated my adolescent years and I still follow it. I received the music honors award in HS and my college improv theater instructor recorded my performance for a grant proposal. I graduated with a BS in Interdisciplinary Arts.

Except for when someone convinced me to sell real estate in 1986 all my work had been as a creative.

Then I got a camera.
After that all my work has included that tool; the perfect tool to incorporate all the arts.

I didn't find photography. Photography found me and has determined my life - a creative life of making photographs.

Me in the Corner

Hi it's ME over in the corner. I live downtown and park wherever. Today I was up at 4 getting coffee, checking email, doing laundry. Most days I'm out the door heading over to the gym by 8:30am before the flower shop lady knocks to get me out of her parking spot. It says so in the lease.

I'm running my little old life day by day as best any middle age newly-single woman can thrown into a mixer.

I'm a professional photographer, and have another blog at blogspot.photo-gram.com but because of all the messing with my life in 2009 I just wasn't inspired to post or follow much of anything. Now that things have focused in a bit after picking up a busy schedule, ie: school, gym and freelance work, life is more consistent.
Thus the title, Second Shot.
Time to restock.
